OPN Healthcare is a U.S.-based, technology-enabled specialty healthcare organisation exclusively focused on cancer care.
For more than two decades, OPN has worked alongside oncologists, health plans, medical groups and other healthcare partners across the United States to make high-quality cancer care accessible within local communities. Today, its care-management services support more than 1.7 million beneficiaries across a growing network of community oncology providers.
Central to OPN’s model is the recognition that the needs of people living with cancer extend far beyond treatment itself. Patients may need help understanding their diagnosis, preparing for treatment, managing symptoms, accessing financial assistance, improving nutrition, connecting with community services or simply knowing where to turn when a question arises.
OPN had already developed an extensive ecosystem of services to respond to those needs. The next step was to create a digital experience capable of bringing that support together around each patient. The vision was ambitious.
OPN wanted a fully branded patient platform that could combine trusted multimedia education, document storage, secure messaging, virtual consultations, personalised patient journeys and connections to wider clinical and community services, all within a HIPAA-compliant environment.
Finding those capabilities together, in a single centralized platform proved difficult. Many platforms addressed individual parts of the requirement, but very few could bring them together within one cohesive patient experience. The alternatives were to compromise on the vision, assemble multiple disconnected technologies, or invest in building and maintaining a bespoke healthcare application from the ground up.
Wellifiy offered another path. By partnering with Wellifiy, OPN created myOPN+, a highly customised digital companion for outpatient cancer care built on an established healthcare platform.
OPN could draw on Wellifiy’s existing capabilities while configuring, integrating and extending the platform around its own model of patient support.
The result is one connected digital environment through which OPN can deliver personalised education, communication, virtual support and practical resources throughout the cancer journey, with a foundation that can continue evolving as its services develop.
OPN was not simply looking for an app. It wanted to create a digital extension of its broader patient-support model.
While a patient’s oncologist remains central to clinical decision-making, many of the challenges associated with cancer occur between formal appointments.
OPN wanted patients to have one trusted place where they could understand what support was available and access the information and services most relevant to them. But that experience also needed to be personalised.
Rich multimedia content including video, audio, written and web-based resources
Requirements That Crossed Traditional Software Categories
OPN needed one platform capable of supporting:
Rich multimedia content including video, audio, written and web-based resources
Secure documents
Direct patient messaging
Virtual consultations
Personalised patient journeys
Diagnosis and group-specific resources
Centralised contacts and support pathways
HIPAA-compliant healthcare information management
Integration with external clinical services
Patient posts and announcements
Multilingual experiences
White labelling under the OPN brand
A polished and intuitive patient experience
Flexibility for OPN-specific workflows and future requirements
Individually, many of these capabilities could be found in healthcare software. Finding them together was much harder.
Content platforms often lacked healthcare communication and workflow capabilities. Telehealth products supported video but offered limited longitudinal patient engagement. Traditional patient portals could manage documents and messages but often provided little flexibility over multimedia content, branding or personalised journeys.
Combining several products would also have risked recreating the fragmentation OPN was trying to remove.
OPN partnered with Wellifiy to create myOPN+, a fully branded digital platform designed around the outpatient cancer journey.
Wellifiy provided an established foundation for multimedia content, communication, video, documents, patient engagement and care-management workflows, while giving OPN the ability to configure and extend the experience around its own services and patient population.
This meant OPN did not have to choose between a rigid off-the-shelf product and a completely bespoke build. Instead, it could begin with a broad set of healthcare-specific capabilities and work with Wellifiy to adapt them around the particular requirements of its model.
myOPN+ carries OPN’s identity throughout the mobile and web experience. Branding, colours, imagery and presentation are configured so that patients experience the platform as part of OPN rather than as an unrelated third-party application. For OPN, this was about more than aesthetics.
Patients are interacting with important healthcare information at a time that may involve considerable uncertainty and stress. The experience therefore needed to feel clear, credible, intuitive and reassuring.Wellifiy allowed OPN to combine enterprise healthcare functionality with a modern, consumer-quality digital experience.
Trusted information is an important part of the cancer journey. Patients may need to understand their diagnosis, prepare for treatment, learn about common side effects, access nutrition guidance, explore financial-support options or revisit information discussed during an appointment.
myOPN+ gives OPN one environment for delivering that information across multiple formats, including video, audio, written content, documents and external resources.
This allows OPN to provide vetted, high-quality information from a trusted source rather than leaving patients to navigate the enormous and often inconsistent volume of information available online, where misinformation or conflicting advice can introduce further confusion and stress.
It also gives patients somewhere to return to when an appointment contains more information than they can reasonably absorb in the moment.
Using Wellifiy’s patient-group and journey capabilities, OPN can organise patients according to factors such as diagnosis, provider, location, referral pathway or current stage of care.
Different patients can then receive different combinations of education, contacts, services and practical resources.
A person preparing for an initial oncology appointment might receive information about what to expect and how to prepare. Someone commencing treatment might instead see resources relating to side effects, nutrition, emotional wellbeing and symptom support.
As needs change, OPN can continue adapting the digital experience around the patient. This enables increasingly personalised support across a large population without requiring every resource and interaction to be manually coordinated for every individual.
Not every service a cancer patient needs should or can be delivered directly within one application. myOPN+ therefore also acts as a digital front door to OPN’s wider support ecosystem.
Relevant pathways can include navigation teams, financial assistance, nutrition programs, counselling, transportation providers, community services and specialist clinical tools.
Wellifiy has also worked with OPN and its technology partners to create more seamless connections with external clinical services, including OPN’s symptom-support pathway. Patients can move from myOPN+ into connected services without having to independently navigate which system or provider they need.
This helps the technology sit around the patient journey rather than forcing the patient journey to sit around the technology.
OPN can make relevant contact details and support pathways available directly within the platform.
These may include patient navigators, financial-support programs, nutrition services, transportation partners, counselling services, community organisations, or other resources relevant to the patient’s situation.
Contacts can be assigned to specific patient groups, ensuring that people see services appropriate to their location, diagnosis, and available benefits.
OPN has connected myOPN+ with its specialist symptom-management service, allowing patients to move from the OPN platform into the appropriate support pathway through a more seamless digital experience.
The integration reduces the need for patients to manage separate accounts or determine which system they should use. Instead, myOPN+ acts as the central starting point through which relevant clinical-support services can be accessed.
This helps create greater continuity between patient education, symptom reporting, and clinical follow-up.
Secure messaging allows OPN to remain connected with patients between formal interactions, while posts and announcements can highlight new services, relevant education and important updates.
Documents can be made available within the same environment, and virtual consultations provide another pathway for patients to ask questions, clarify concerns and prepare for important clinical conversations.
Bringing these capabilities together creates greater continuity between education, communication and care and ensures real-time support for patients at any time.
A central part of the partnership has been Wellifiy’s ability to adapt the platform around requirements specific to OPN.
This has included tailored patient journeys, external service integrations, patient-group configuration, bulk onboarding, specialised support pathways and an expanding multilingual experience.
Rather than building a system around a fixed set of requirements at one point in time, OPN has a platform that can continue evolving as new services, integrations and patient needs emerge.
One of the most important outcomes for OPN is the ability to address a broad set of patient-support requirements through a single digital platform.
Multimedia education, documents, messaging, virtual consultations, personalised resources, support contacts and connected services can all sit within one cohesive environment.
For patients, that means a simpler experience. For OPN, it provides a common digital foundation around which its wider patient-support model can continue to grow.
With more than 1.7 million beneficiaries supported through OPN’s care-management services, personalisation cannot depend entirely on one-to-one manual coordination.
myOPN+ gives OPN a structured way to tailor digital experiences for different patient populations while managing resources centrally.
The result is a model in which scale is not a limiting factor to a truly personalized experience for every patient.
Cancer care does not stop when a consultation ends. Questions arise at home. Symptoms change. Financial concerns emerge. Patients remember things they wanted to ask or need to revisit information discussed previously.
myOPN+ keeps OPN support available to patients between before, during, and after clinical appointments, offering a practical option to the realities of day to day experiences of oncology patients.
Patients can return to trusted education, explore available services, locate important contacts and move into relevant support pathways when they need them.
This creates greater continuity across a journey that can otherwise feel divided into individual appointments and services.
Much of myOPN+’s value lies in what OPN can continue building around it.
Resources can be updated centrally. New patient journeys can be introduced. Additional languages and communications can be added. New external services can be connected without rebuilding the entire patient experience.
OPN therefore gains more than a patient-facing application. It gains an adaptable digital foundation.
myOPN+ began with a difficult question: how could OPN bring an unusually broad set of patient-support requirements together without compromising on its vision or taking on the burden of building an entire healthcare application from the ground up?
The partnership with Wellifiy provides a path between the traditional choices of buying and building. OPN gains the foundation of an established highly protected HIPAA compliant healthcare platform, including multimedia content, documents, communication, video, personalised journeys and healthcare-specific infrastructure, while retaining the flexibility to shape that platform around its own brand, workflows, integrations and evolving patient model.
As OPN continues developing myOPN+, the focus can remain where it belongs: creating better ways to support patients throughout the cancer journey rather than rebuilding the underlying technology required to make those experiences possible.
